Alberta's Elections

Since the province's founding in 1905, Alberta has had an election roughly every four years, with the most recent being the 30th Alberta General Election on April 16th, 2019. Alberta has had 18 Premiers from six separate political parties, and has two unique traits: no party has ever won government after having lost it at some point, and there has never been a minority government (where the biggest party has fewer than 50% of seats) despite the fact that nearly half of Alberta's elections have not given a single party a majority of the vote.

This page includes basic summaries for each election, as well as electoral maps and a breakdown of the seat count. If you would like to learn more, APAH will be working to fill in more data for each past election, working backwards from 2019.

Election Description

This election must be held between March 1st, 2023 and May 31st, 2023, in accordance with Alberta's fixed election dates laws. However, if the Legislature is dissolved early (either at the request of the Premier or as the result of a vote of non-confidence) it may happen earlier. As a result, the rankings here represent parties' current seat counts, the parties registered to contest this election, and how many seats they would need to form a majority. Parties are first ranked by their current seat count, and if there is a tie (including for 0 seats) then parties will be ranked generally based on current polling.

Election Description

This election saw the newly-formed UCP led by former Conservative MP Jason Kenney win a majority government, unseating Premier Notley's NDP government after only a single term. This was the first time in Alberta's history that a party failed to win re-election at least once, as well as the fourth time a party won government in the first election it contested, and the UCP is now the first party in Alberta's history to receive more than one million votes in an election. This is the first time the NDP has formed the official opposition since 1989, and is their second-best showing in an election (behind 2015). 2019 was the third instance of only two parties winning seats in Alberta's history, and the first since 1993, despite the third-place Alberta Party securing over 9% of the vote and a record-breaking thirteen parties contesting the election. The Liberal Party was also shut out, something that's only happened in 5 of the 29 elections it's contested, and the Social Credit Party was absent for only the second time since its formation in 1935.

Election Description

This election saw the NDP win a surprise upset victory, unseating the longest-running political dynasty in Canadian history to form Alberta's first left-wing government in 80 years. This was the fourth time Alberta had experienced a change in government, and the NDP are only the second party to have lost at least one election before forming government. PC Premier Jim Prentice called an early snap election despite more than a year left in his mandate, and was then swept from power after an unbroken 44-year PC majority government from 1971 to 2015. The Wildrose Party, despite suffering a huge blow from most of its caucus and former leader crossing the floor to the PCs before the election, maintained its position as official opposition with an expanded seat count. The NDP, PCs, and Wildrose were joined by one member from both the Liberal and Alberta Parties - marking the first electoral win for the AP. On election night, Prentice resigned his seat and leadership, leaving both vacant.
